Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body?
I was always physically able to play baseball and basketball well. I didn’t have any issues with my performance. I didn’t like the way I looked though, but I was okay with it for the most part. I would often wear loose and baggy clothing to hide my stomach. I was embarrassed (if I had to sum it up in one word). Eventually, I felt I was too young to be feeling like this, and from there on out, my attitude about my body became, “You have to work for change.”
What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey?
I actually got hit in the eye with a pitch in baseball practice and broke my orbital floor, scratched my cornea, and needed three stitches.3 After coming out of that with my eye still intact and working well, my perspective changed. I saw myself as something I could improve rather than someone I just was. Also, during the recovery period, I wasn’t allowed to exercise and I put on about 10 extra pounds in those two months. Once I hit 200 pounds, I was shocked and P90X became my method of change.
What is the greatest challenge you faced before beginning the program? How did the program and Beachbody help you overcome that challenge?
I think the greatest challenge was the eating. I struggled to find a good eating balance for a while. Once I settled on a routine of breakfast, snack, work out, recovery smoothie, and small dinner, my results really took off. Beachbody is the reason I found this routine. I put my own thoughts about when I should eat to the side and let Tony Horton’s ideas dictate my eating schedule and what I ate. I have to say, putting that faith into Tony was probably the best decision I’ve ever made, because he was absolutely right, and eating at those times feels really natural for my body.
What in particular did you like about the program you chose?
A large portion of the workout was up to me. I could go as hard as I wanted to. I wanted to get into shape, and Tony provided me with the freedom to be extra intense, do extra reps, and do the most and best I could. Doing maximum rep pull-ups and push-ups, making moves harder, and increasing weights gave me the freedom to make the workout as hard and productive as it could be for me, and I’m very glad it did.
Describe the results you achieved with your Beachbody program. Which achievements are you proud of?
I lost 38 pounds, and I feel and look better than I ever thought I would. I went from being able to do about 20 pull-ups in the whole Legs & Back routine without a chair to being able to do 30 reverse grip chin-ups without the chair in a row. The strength I have and feel in my body is incredible. My jumping has improved drastically as well. I can jump about a foot higher than I could before P90X. Playing basketball, I’ve been able to run by anyone, and I don’t get tired from running. I also have respiratory-induced asthma, but exercise doesn’t affect my breathing anymore. When I was 15, I wanted a six-pack and I was pretty big. I worked out every day, but the results just never happened. I remember one of my friends telling me she was closer to a six-pack than I would ever be, and that stuck with me. Three years later, I’m the one with the six-pack. That’s what I’m most proud of.
How has your life changed since completing your Beachbody program?
Everyone I talk to comments on how good I look, and I just feel so much better. The journey and success have become a part of me, and even Tony’s easygoing personality has lightened me up a little bit. I’ve always been extroverted and a jokester, but I was never this happy all of the time. All of the girls think I’m very cute now, every day I’m smiling, my dad is proud, and I just couldn’t be happier with what I’ve accomplished.
