Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body?
I had daily heartburn and had to take multiple antacid tablets to get through the night. I also took four 200mg Ibuprofen pills every six hours for back pain. I did not have energy to do anything. I was out of breath doing anything, like just standing up, and my family started making comments. I also snored. I had to push off something to even stand up. I stopped caring that my shirt size was XXL and fit snugly, and my pants were a 40 waist.
What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey?
I was about to turn 48. I knew I had to get my act together, and I set a two-year goal to reach that goal before I turned 50. I had done P90X for three months in 2013 in order to get in shape to go on my son’s high adventure camping trip in New Mexico. I knew I would be carting a 65 pound pack at high altitude. I did not want to fail the base camp physical, so I gave it my all… and after that 16-day trek, I stopped exercising but kept that high altitude diet. The weight came back on, and more. I knew from that first stint doing P90X that Tony Horton motivates me. I knew I could modify the program based on my physical ability, and that I did not need to be intimidated by how hard the routines are. I also know that Tony is genuine in his comments throughout the videos about doing what you can; just showing up is big. And then I discovered P90X3, and went for it.
What is the greatest challenge you faced before beginning the program? How did the program and Beachbody® help you overcome that challenge?
The physical location of my home gym. In July 15, the space I had allocated was a tiny piece of open concrete in my unfinished basement, and running shoes. My wife was also extremely out of shape and a major naysayer, saying I would fail and thus would not support the expense of purchasing the program or buying appropriate shoes and investing in a better exercise space.
What in particular did you like about the program you chose?
Everything. I love how I can do P90X3 anywhere. I have done Dynamix on the beach in front of our timeshare at the Hilton Hawaiin Village hotel in Waikiki, and outside an ice fishing trailer in below zero. I had two major breakthroughs in YogaX on my yoga mat on the ice in fact, routines I could never do before. I can fit routines in day and night. I can do it in hotel gyms, hotel rooms, my office, wherever. I just print and follow the calendar. I have now done Classic, Lean and just finished my second Doubles session. I did the Elite Block after each program.
Describe the results you achieved with your Beachbody program. Which achievements are you proud of?
The first time I felt like doing anything physical other than the mandatory P90X3 daily routine happened on the 70th day in the program. That was when I went for a walk with the dog or something trivial like that. Since then, I now row, bike, and I have found I like to run. I am now running up to an hour and a half, and just ran my first 5k event, a Turkey Trot. I feel incredible. I also doubled up the past month during Doubles Elite Block and added INSANITY. I am in my fifth week of INSANITY now. I intend to supplement INSANITY with my favorite P90X3 routines because I know they are hard and I do not want to lose the progress, especially with Isometrix, CVX and The Challenge. There are still other routines I want to tackle, like crane cracker pushups and other stuff I do not do very well.
How has your life changed since completing your Beachbody program?
I now have gobs of energy. I think about Beachbody programs every day. I look forward to exercising, which I never did before. I feel like I can do a lot. And I have a lot more to accomplish. I have seen the updates of Ed from p90x3 Dynamix and how ripped he has become, and I think, wow, I can do that – maybe before I reach 50. I have ~8 months to do it. however, Beachbody is always the priority, following the program, in order, per the calendars. Stuff like running or whatever is in addition to.
Tell us about your experience with Beachbody On Demand. If applicable, how has it helped you achieve your goals?
I love it. I also have the disks which I used while traveling until my portable player broke. Now I even stream from my hotel room. At home, we put in an HDTV with WiFi and its sole purpose is to stream BOD.
