Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body?
Disappointed. That’s how I felt. I used to be an athlete, and I had convinced myself that I still was. Then one day I was much closer to 300 pounds than 200, and I was disgusted. I was just going through the motions at work and with my family. I had become pretty checked out and was clearly unhappy. I hated to look in the mirror, or when I did, I’d talk myself into thinking that I wasn’t that bad. I ate way too much, and most of it was greasy, fried, or just carbs — sometimes all three at once. I have two young kids and a beautiful wife who weren’t getting the best of me.
What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey?
My dad had a quadruple bypass surgery in his early 50s, his brother had a heart attack in his early 50s, and their dad also had multiple bypass surgery in his 50s. I was headed down that road and decided that I needed to start fighting my genetics now while I still can. I want to be not just there, but engaged and actively involved in my children’s lives. I wanted to be a better husband to my wife, and none of this was going to happen if I didn’t address my growing weight issue and start to be happy with myself again.
What is the greatest challenge you faced before beginning the program? How did the program and Beachbody help you overcome that challenge?
Food. I’ve always been able to get my body moving, no matter how out of shape, but changing my diet has never happened. I followed the recommended eating/nutrition plan that came with the 21 Day Fix. It was great because it was still pretty normal food, and I saw it as a sustainable change that could be made. The issue I’d had before with food was that diets always required weird foods that I would not realistically prepare and eat, at least not more than once. It also helped to be a part of a community of people who were/are going through the same challenges as I was/am and could offer encouragement and new ideas to try to help keep the meals interesting but still fit within the guidelines. The other challenge would be “finding” the time. In the end, I realize that this was just an excuse. Making the time to get in the workout was a challenge in the beginning.
What in particular did you like about the program you chose?
The absolutely killer workout that is crammed into only 30 minutes! That and the fact that it really does hit every part of your body; you might be working lower body, but your shoulders are going to burn right along with your legs. I’ve not done a lot of HIIT before, but I am truly a fan now. It allows for maximum results with minimum time invested (at least on the workout side of things).
Describe the results you achieved with your Beachbody program. Which achievements are you proud of?
I’ve lost over 70 pounds, and I am able to fit into my military uniforms again. I hadn’t been able to wear my Dress Blues since I got out in 2006, but they fit me now!
How has your life changed since completing your Beachbody program?
I am back to being the person I want to be. I am present when I am home. My time with family is of a better quality because of the changes these past months, and I am a better husband to my wife since I am finally happy with myself again! I feel better than I have in a decade. I have more energy and don’t spend time moping and lounging around the house watching TV. I am so much healthier, and I am doing my best to ensure that I avoid the path of heart disease and other complications.

Shakeology has been awesome for me. It is the best way to start my day! I am terrible about eating breakfast. Before, when I did, it would either be something fast, like a donut, or something heavy and greasy, but definitely not something very good for me. Shakeology gives me a great boost and starts my day out on a healthy note. It is also more filling and sticks with me longer than any of those simple carbs would, which helps to keep me from snacking too often or seeking out heavy snacks.
