Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body?
I have been a paramedic for the last 24 years. I am married with two sons. Prior to starting the program, I believe I was like a lot of people who are overweight. I knew I was big, felt I was big, but was in a little bit or a lot, depending if you asked me or my wife, of denial. I would keep telling myself, you’re not that big. I would compare myself to other people I knew, saying I’m not as big as they are. I would work my shifts, weather it was a day shift or night shift, and blame my eating habits on work. I would say things like, “I eat when I can” or “midnight is my supper time”. Yes, working shift work and being a paramedic does put a little different strain on eating habits, but I took full advantage of that. And when I was not working, chips and pop were my late-night best friends.
What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey?
A friend of my wife told her she was becoming a Coach for Beachbody and wanted my wife to join under her. I thought that would be a great idea for her, and I should support her and do it with her. I was also going through a difficult time, I was off work and had just been diagnosed with PTSD. My psychologist wanted me to start exercising, so we joined Beachbody.3
What is the greatest challenge you faced before beginning the program? How did the program and Beachbody help you overcome that challenge?
I was never able to stick to something. I was never good at routine. I would start something, and quit or give up a week or so after, using every excuse I could. Once I started 21 Day Fix , I realized just how big and out of shape I was, which pushed me to get a little better. In the cooldown, I was unable to touch my toes. After about 2 weeks, I was finally able to reach them. This was a win, a moment when I saw progress, and ever since I have been trying to find the next progression. I started this journey in June of 2016. Just last week, after months of trying, little by little, I finally achieved Bow Pose. Another win. Now this may seem silly or no big deal to most people, but to me it was the world. For someone whose world revolves around going into strangers’ lives and trying to bring order to chaos as a paramedic, and as a paramedic with PTSD, having something that brings order, routine, reaching a new level that puts a smile on my face. It makes my chaos make sense.
What in particular did you like about the program you chose?
I like it all; from the warm-up to the cooldown. The motivation that Autumn brings across, the way the exercises are laid out; it was great to follow, and when I had to modify, there was Kat. Seeing someone on T.V. who looked real, who looked like me, and doing it, made me think I can do it.
Describe the results you achieved with your Beachbody program. Which achievements are you proud of?
My results are losing weight, and regaining me. I am proud of everything; losing 65 lbs. so far, going from a size 42 waist to a size 36, from a 2XL shirt to a large, feeling better about myself and my marriage. Just feeling like me again.
How has your life changed since completing your Beachbody program?
My health is better, my marriage is better, my mind is better. I’m a better person. I can do things that I haven’t been able to do in almost 20 years. I can now run 5 km in 35 minutes. I could never run more than 50 feet before I would stop and be out of breath. I feel younger. I know when to stop eating. Before Beachbody the plate was never full enough. Now, I know what portion control is and it can do.
How did participating in a Challenge Group help you reach your goals? How did your group support you and keep you accountable?
The 30-day Health Bet and the group made it fun to post pictures. My wife and I made it a bit of a competition between us, and knowing that the group was cheering each other on and only wanting success for everyone made it fun.
How did your Team Beachbody Coach support you on your journey?
She would keep us on track, support us if we felt we didn’t want to do a workout on a day, and would send us a little motivational chat and keep us going. By posting every day, and showing us that she was committed, she helped us stay committed.
How did a Beachbody Supplement or Nutritional Product or Program (such as Shakeology or Beachbody Ultimate Reset) support your transformation? What are the greatest benefits you gained? Did you see benefits to your energy, sleep, mood/mental clarity, digestion/regularity?
I have had Chocolate Vegan and Tropical Strawberry. Shakeology is like cheating by not cheating. It helped me feel full when I would have it for breakfast, and help me push past the wants for something else to eat. After a workout I would feel as though it was recharging the batteries.2
Tell us about your experience with Beachbody On Demand. If applicable, how has it helped you achieve your goals?
Beachbody On Demand is the best. I do my workouts from my iPhone, iPad, or through my Apple TV, which allows me to watch and follow along on my 55-inch TV. It gives me the convenience of doing my workouts anywhere. We went on vacation for 2 weeks but every night in our hotel room we would stream and do our workout. If we didn’t have Beachbody On Demand we would have just not done it and missed out, but it kept us on track.
